Annotated Bibliography of the Cultural History of the Germans in Alberta

The GCAA, in cooperation with Dr. Manfred Prokop, is pleased to announce the completion of this unique book on the history of the German-Canadian community in Alberta. It contains some 6,100 annotated entries from German-and-English-language newspapers from 1882 to the present, from books, scholarly journals, photos, archive holdings, etc. on the German-speaking groups in Alberta. This includes all "Germans" from wherever they may have come - Hutterites, Mennonites, Moravians, the Swiss, and the Austrians, etc.


What can you find in this book? Did you know that...

  • the first German-speaking settler in Alberta was probably Phil Weinard who came from Bitburg in 1882?
  • the German Baptists south of Rabbit Hill held their church opening service on June 17, 1896?
  • Edmonton's Edelweiss Club was founded in 1906?
  • on February 11, 1916 an outbreak of anti-German mob violence occurred in Calgary?
  • construction on the new building for Concordia College started in 1925?
  • the first German Days took place in 1928?
  • Adolf Hitler's non-commissioned officer in the Austrian army on the eastern front in 1917 - Paul Gurtler - emigrated to Canada soon after the War? He lived in Drumheller, and on September 5, 1939 he tried to enlist in the army to fight against Hitler.
  • Archduke Rudolf von Hapsburg, brother of Archduke Otto, pretender to the Austrian throne, came to Alberta in 1942? He was one of 60 students at the University of Laval who traveled to Western Canada to help with the harvest. - And so on.

This bibliography assembles in one place references to the thousands of primary and secondary materials about the "Germans" in Alberta which are available in libraries ands archives across Alberta and elsewhere. The objective of this project is to facilitate research in German-Alberta history by the public at large and interested students, teachers, and scholars.
